Such large amounts of money in cryptocurrencies have attracted the attention of thieves. An early, spectacular theft occurred in February 2014, when Mt. Gox, the world’s third largest Bitcoin exchange, declared bankruptcy because of the theft of about 650,000 Bitcoins, then valued at about $380 million. The largest cryptocurrency hack happened in 2025, when $1.4 billion in Ethereum was stolen from the Bybit exchange. Evidence pointed to the Lazarus Group of North Korean hackers as being behind the Bybit theft. (The Federal Bureau of Investigation had previously identified the Lazarus Group as the culprits in a 2022 cryptocurrency heist of $614 million.)

According to a 2020 report produced by the United States Attorney General’s Cyber-Digital Task Force, three categories make up the majority of illicit cryptocurrency uses: «(1) financial transactions associated with the commission of crimes; (2) money laundering and the shielding of legitimate activity from tax, reporting, or other legal requirements; or (3) crimes, such as theft, directly implicating the cryptocurrency marketplace itself.» The report concluded that «for cryptocurrency to realize its truly transformative potential, it is imperative that these risks be addressed» and that «the government has legal and regulatory tools available at its disposal to confront the threats posed by cryptocurrency’s illicit uses».

Cryptocurrency shiba inu
Working both for and against SHIB is its 1 quadrillion token supply. However, investors enjoy seeing that they own huge numbers of a token, as opposed to Bitcoin, where owning even one whole coin is impossible for many.
Shiba Inu is an Ethereum-based altcoin (a cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin) that features the Shiba Inu—a Japanese breed of hunting dog—as its mascot. Shiba Inu is widely considered to be an alternative to Dogecoin; in fact, proponents of Shiba Inu have touted it in the past as «the Dogecoin killer.»
Because Shiba Inu is an Ethereum-based ERC-20 token, it was created on and hosted by the Ethereum blockchain instead of its own blockchain. Ryoshi stated in the paper that they chose to build the Shiba Inu ecosystem on Ethereum because it was already secure and well-established, and it allowed the project to stay decentralized.
These long strings of numbers, both in terms of tokens owned and the price per token, make calculation difficult. As such, some SHIB investors multiply their holding of SHIB tokens by an optimistic future price of $0.01 per SHIB or even $1, mostly just for simplicity’s sake.
This followed the launch of ShibaSwap’s burn portal in April 2022, which rewarded users for burning SHIB with burntSHIB tokens. This burntSHIB is used to get RYOSHI tokens, which can also be staked on ShibaSwap.
